Emergency School Gas Meter Replacement

Fabwell Heating & Plumbing Ltd received an urgent call from a school on Friday after a significant gas escape was discovered from the commercial gas meter supplying the main kitchen.

Upon attendance, the meter was confirmed as the source of the leak. Due to the immediate safety risk, the incoming gas supply was isolated and the installation was made safe without delay.

The defective meter supplied the school’s main catering kitchen, meaning the kitchen could not operate while the gas remained isolated. With the following Monday being a bank holiday and pupils due to return to school on Thursday, there was a very limited timeframe in which to source and install a suitable replacement.

Our Emergency Response

The replacement was treated as a priority due to both the seriousness of the gas escape and the importance of restoring the school’s catering facilities before the pupils returned.

Despite the bank-holiday weekend, the correct replacement commercial gas meter was sourced and the installation was arranged for Tuesday.

Works Completed

The emergency works included:

• Responding to the initial call received on Friday.
• Identifying the commercial gas meter as the source of the gas escape.
• Immediately isolating the incoming gas supply and making the installation safe.
• Sourcing a correctly sized replacement commercial gas meter over the bank-holiday period.
• Returning to site on Tuesday to complete the replacement.
• Disconnecting and removing the defective gas meter.
• Installing and connecting the new commercial gas meter.
• Inspecting the associated inlet and outlet pipework, fittings and connections.
• Carrying out the required gas-tightness testing.
• Purging and safely reinstating the gas supply.
• Checking the operation of the downstream kitchen equipment.
• Commissioning the new meter and completing the necessary gas-safety checks.

The Outcome

The new gas meter was installed, tested and commissioned successfully on Tuesday—just one working day after the bank-holiday weekend and two days before pupils returned on Thursday.

The urgent response removed the immediate gas-safety risk and ensured the school kitchen was fully operational in time to resume preparing hot meals for pupils and staff.

This project demonstrates Fabwell Heating & Plumbing Ltd’s ability to react quickly to a commercial gas emergency, source specialist equipment within a restricted timeframe and restore an essential service with minimal disruption to the customer.

All works were completed by suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineers in accordance with current gas-safety requirements.
